A Feast For Crows ... Kinda
After a very long wait, George R. R. Martin is finally done his fourth novel in the epic A Song of Ice and Fire ... kinda. It's big. Real big. Too big to publish as one novel big. Martin had a difficult time publishing the third book in the series as one volume due to its size; A Feast For Crows is even longer! Rather than cut the entire book down the middle like Tad Williams did with his final volume of Memory, Sorrow and Thorn -- To Green Angel Tower, Martin has decided to remove some characters from Feast and place them, in their entirety, in another book that will run parallel to it.
Splitting the book this way should be interesting. I found that when I read To Green Angel, it was hard to keep track of everyone at once and both books dragged on as a result. Martin's solution should make for richer character development without taking forever. Publishing the books in this fashion also allows Feast to get to press much earlier so nuts like me can grab a copy sooner rather than later!

Garbage Fluff
First it was PolyStyrene houses, now it's reconstituted household garbage, called "Fluff" as a building material. Makes you wonder what else can be made or reused doesn't it? (via Boing Boing)
World's Fastest Plant
The plant, Bunchberry dogwood (Cornus canadensis) is not running, but it does fling its pollen at very high speeds with the aid of a trebuchet-like system (link).
Just when you think you've got nature figured out ... (via Boing Boing)
Expanded PolyStyrene Houses
I've heard of different types of housing and have even seen a "straw bale" house but this is the first time I've heard of building a house out of polystyrene! (via Rebecca's Pocket)
The second straw bale link was the house I saw; the walls had been completed by then and were very thick!
iTunes Music Store = Dangerous
I have to limit my visits to the iTMS to only once or twice a month. I keep finding old albums that I have on cassette or that are too interesting to pass up. The most recent downloads were, along with some They Might Be Giants, the Broadway soundtracks to Monty Python's Spamalot and Avenue Q. If you aren't familiar with Avenue Q, take a look at it. The soundtrack's interesting to say the least -- songs are for the most part hilariously funny and in some cases sooo true.
Spamalot on high bandwidth or on low bandwidth.

Jen and Snuggles
Ok, so Nic's not the only snake I'm fond of. I'll not be able to do this with Snuggles much longer; eventually he'll get to be about 7' - 8' long.
Next snake to wrap around my head? Maybe Lucifer, our male black pine snake ... keep watch to find out!
Parafilm: Better Than Plastic Wrap
Parafilm is a must for any science lab. I used to use it all the time in the labs at UNBSJ and at the high school I taught at in Hull. Apparently it can also be used in other, more mundane applications such as covering paint pots, modeling and crafts.
Parafilm is flexible, can be stretched, cut to any size and reused a number of times. Just great stuff! I've got to get me a roll of this! (via Rebecca's Pocket)

Eggses
Jon checked Pretzel's nesting box on Wednesday to check up on her; no eggs. We checked again tonight and found a nice clutch of 13 eggs. They are very good looking with a great weight. They are now in the incubator and should hatch somewhere around the 10th of July.

Mad Physics Web Site
Madphysics.com is a relatively new physics site. It focuses mainly on labs and experiment work in physics but also has some general news and developments in all the science fields.
Re-watching Star Wars I and II
We've been re-watching Star Wars Episodes I and II in preparation for Episode III. I hadn't realized until now that I had missed the beginning of Ep. I. I forget if I saw the movie first in theater or at home -- it's nice to finally see where Jar-Jar came from and how Darth Maul came into the picture (and then left again).
Unfortunately we'll not get to see Ep. III opening night because there is a BBQ and other activities at the school that night. Ah well, it's another movie that'll be bought as soon as it's available.
Movie Trailer
The movie trailer (Quicktime) for The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe has been released. Nuthin' to say but "WOW!"
This is a must-see at the very least; we'll probably end up buying it as soon as we can.
Roller-coasters
I'm always a sucker for roller-coasters; any time there's an excursion to a 'coaster park, I'm all for it. The end of the year trip for my high school will be to Canada's Wonderland where I'll finally get to ride the "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider" coaster. It's an inverted, lay down ride ... if it doesn't make you feel like you're flying, nothing will!
In the meantime, I found a series of pics of an abandoned coaster in Japan. I don't know what the captions read, but the photos are nice. I especially like the effect of the fog -- just looks surreal! (via Tribe)
A couple other links to more abandoned rides at the same park: 1, 2
