"Fingertips"
For those of you who know of They Might Be Giants, you'll probably know exactly what I'm talking about when I mention "Fingertips". Apparently a flash movie has been made of the song. Colin Mochrie is in it. It's very bizarre. I'm sure it's just what the Giants would like! (via: Screenhead)

"Baguette-Sized" Sea Critter
It always astounds me just how little we know about the world under our feet, more specifically, in our oceans. There is so much of the ocean that's not mapped out and we have no idea just what's down there. When I was working at the Huntsman, one of my favorite exhibits was the deep sea room. The critters in there were just so ... weird!
Well, here's another weird one for you: a new type of animal that is described "as being the length of a French baguette with the diameter of a broom handle." This is pretty big for a deep sea critter -- the pressure at extreme depths is such that implosion is a factor in larger animals. On the other hand, those that are living in the deeps cannot survive at lesser pressures; they would literally fall apart.
A final note on the BBC article; one of the researchers involved: Dr. Haddock! Heh.

First Show in Shawville
We did our first non-school snake show in Shawville today for a day camp. The kids were really well behaved and more or less quiet -- for kids. We took 10 snakes of various sizes and species ranging from garter snakes to "Snuggles" the boa constrictor.
The talking part of the show took about half an hour; we then let the kids who wanted, to come up and touch the critters. The organizer of the day camp liked the show and said that the kids seemed to get a lot out of it. Not too bad for an hour's work! They even gave us a "thank you" card for coming.

It's currently 36°C and tomorrow they're calling for 35°C, there's hardly a breath of air outside and both cats are bummed out on their backs on the floor. I think the only active ones in the house are the fish!
It's the kind of day where, if I had a pool, I'd probably be in it non-stop -- the fish have the right idea! In the meantime, I'll switch between reading, drinking lots of Gator Aid and iced tea, watching fish and bothering cats. I may go into the basement, it'll be cooler, and do some organizing, but the thought of doing work doesn't really appeal to me at the moment.
We were supposed to go to Owen Sound tomorrow to visit an old friend of mine, but with the temps the way they are, it doesn't look like it's going to happen.

Corn Snake Update
So far there have been a total of 5 corns that have pipped and emerged from the egg. There are still two questionable eggs left that have not pipped; I'm going to give them until tomorrow morning and, if they're not pipped by then, I'll do it for them.

Hatching Eggses
I checked the incubator this morning and found that two of Pretzel's eggs have pipped.
Yay!! Let the fun begin! I hope the lil guys will want to eat.
Jon's post on it.
Update: There are now a total of 5 eggs that have pipped. The little snouts poking out are sooo cute! I'm hoping that at least two more will pip soon. No babies have yet ventured outside the shell.

"Fishy Fishy Fishy!"
When I brought my aquarium home from school, it had 1 goldfish, 2 female guppies, a very large snail, a lot of algae and whatever plants the snail hadn't managed to eat up to that point. One of the guppies died 24hrs after the move. Since the tank, a 20 gal. (tall), looked so empty with only two fish in it, I decided I had to get some more.
My first trip to the pet store resulted in: 3 glass shrimp, 1 chinese algae eater, 2 lyre-tailed mollies and 3 guppies (a male blue neon, a male fancy, a "normal" female). One of the mollies and a shrimp didn't make the first 24 hours. They were consumed by the snail -- and I wonder how the thing got so huge! The other molly, male fancy, and a second shrimp have since been eaten by the snail. Sheesh.
Today I went back to the store and got 2 sailfin mollies. These mollies are bigger than the guppies but not as big as the goldfish. They went to work helping the algae eater as soon as they were introduced to the tank. Hopefully they'll last! The tank now looks nice and I don't think I need to add anything more. Well ... maybe some more plants. I hope to have a few pics up of the tank soon.
Next tank project? Maybe a small colony of neon tetras.
